A room is not a bedroom unless it has a closet so you might need to know how to build a closet in a bedroom. This is not a project that just anyone can tackle. You need to have the carpentry skills and know-how before attempting to build a closet in a bedroom.
Tools you will need:
- Tape measure
- Tape
- Chalk line
- Level
- Pencil
- Hammer
- Screw driver/Power drill
- Square
- Nail gun
- Masonry bit
- Joint tape
- Drywall/sheetrock
- Lumber
- Closet rod
- Door
- Paint
- Paint brush/Roller
- Putty Knife
- Joint compound/Tape
- Plastic
- Check your home’s blueprint. Do you have enough room to build a closet? Use a scale to measure and outline your future bedroom closet.
- Build the closet against an existing wall. If possible, build it into a corner.
- Use a tape measure to determine the area and depth of the closet. Take measurements from the ceiling and transfer them to the floor. Mark the areas with tape or a chalk line.
- Remove baseboards and crown moldings before you begin building a closet in a bedroom, keeping in mind that if you have a carpeted floor, then you will need to cut out the carpet where the frame will go.
- Install the base and top plates. Drill holes to screw in the plates and attach the two by four to the concrete. Use a masonry bit to drill holes into the concrete.
- Mark stud positions. Draw lines where the studs will be (sixteen inches apart).
- Frame the closet walls. Attach the first wall stud by drilling in drywall screws and do the same with the second wall stud. Cut and measure two by fours to place between the wall studs.
- Repeat step six on the opposite side of the new bedroom closet.
- Build the walls. After measuring the dimension of the frames, transfer them to your drywall using a pencil. Cut through the pencil marks with a cutting knife. Screw or nail the board to the frame.
- Measure and install the door jamb then do the same with the doorstop.
- Finish the wall joints. The nail marks can be disguised by using a self-stick, perforated joint tape.
- Install the closet door according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Install a rod inside the closet using pole pockets.
- Cover the nail holes with spackling then paint the walls to match the rest of the room. Now you can install the shelves and closet bar. Your new bedroom closet is now ready to use!
